Cleaning is an essential everyday task and follows a rigorous code of practise, one of the most important being colour coding; preventing cross contamination from one area to another. Colour coded cleaning was established in the late 1990’s by The British Institute of Cleaning Science and has since been observed throughout the cleaning industry.

Designed with optimising cleaning practices in mind, colour coding has been proven to prevent the spread of harmful bacteria throughout indoor spaces. Within the food manufacturing and catering sector, adhering to colour coded cleaning products is essential to make hygiene maintenance simple and effective, whilst maximising workplace cleanliness. The Nationwide Caterers Association (NCA) ensures that all food is prepped safely and hygienically, sending out EHO’s (Environmental Health Officers) to audit the companies cleaning capabilities, ensuring it is optimised and the risk of bacteria spreading is minimal.

Types of Colour Coding

The following is the colour codes broadly accepted by The British Institute of Cleaning Science.

Yellow – High risk/ infected areas.

Red – Washrooms and toilets.

Green – Kitchens.

Blue – General Areas.

Colour coding prevents the chance of cross-contamination. Without it, harmful bacteria from washrooms and toilets may travel to kitchen facilities where, if consumed, will cause illness. The colours used are often swapped depending on industry, for example, within medical environments yellow is used for the extremely high- risk areas, such as surgical environments, limiting the spread of hazards such as the spread of spilt bodily fluids from different areas.

Arrow can accommodate colour coding within your business through supplying colour coded mops, mop buckets, dust pans and brushes, limiting the spread of bacteria and reducing harm.
